Marieta (Mazurka) by Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909)
Time 1:53
Tárrega is considered to have laid the foundations for 20th century classical guitar and for increasing interest in the guitar as a recital instrument. Tárrega preferred small intimate performances over the concert stage. Some believe this was because he played without the nails needed for volume. Others say this was related to his childhood trauma. |
Notes
A Mazurka is a polish dance form resembling the polka, frequently adopted as a ballet form. It is written in triple time 3/4 or 3/8 time with the second beat heavily accented. Mazurka is a style of dancing that originated among ordinary people and not in the royal courts. Tarrega is my favorite guitar composer next to Bach. To me, this mazurka carries an eerie tone to it. The song also explores several guitar techniques making it challenging to play.
Guitar Demo (Pepe Romero)
Guitar Pro Playthrough
Lento (slow). 3/4 Time Signature. 24 Bars with 2 parts. Play as AABBA .
There are several technique in this piece. Hammer on, pull off, harmonic, high fret barred chords, triplets, etc… When it comes to Tarrega, you will need patience. Play the song in sections and work on piecing it together later. Always start slow so you won’t stumble later. Practice is the key. Good Luck!
